You

  • GMC-registered medical practitioner and GP
  • Experience in neurology would be advantageous but not essential

The National Migraine Centre is the only UK charity providing specialist consultations for people suffering from primary headaches. With over 40 years of experience, our CQC-approved clinic is recognised internationally for clinical excellence and innovation.

Our doctors are among the country’s leading headache specialists, conducting weekly clinics while also building the charity’s profile and promoting self-management through the media and our podcast, Heads Up.

While the National Migraine Centre is primarily a patient-focused clinic, we undertake other charitable work too, including providing professional and patient education and resources. We also contribute to various headache research projects.

About the role

As a GP Headache Specialist, you will:

  • Provide outpatient headache assessment and management in the clinic via remote e-consultations on video or phone links. You can be flexible with your hours, working in four-hour blocks.
  • Provide high standards of clinical care. This is achieved by:
    • developing sufficient knowledge to diagnose primary and secondary headaches (bespoke training provided)
    • identifying and managing ‘red flag’ symptoms
    • good communication skills with patients and colleagues at all levels
    • collaborative management planning with patients
    • attendance at relevant courses, conferences and membership of headache specialist organisations
  • Write comprehensive reports for patients and their GPs, outlining relevant recommendations for management, investigations, or onward referral. Letters for work, schools, college, etc are also provided by our doctors when required.
  • Train other GP colleagues
  • Foster good communication and working relationships with referring practitioners
  • Engage with colleagues in the development of literature, both for professional and lay audiences
  • Have the opportunity to support other charitable activities, including:
    • patient education programs
    • professional education programs
    • media and social media campaigns, speaking to journalists for magazines and newspapers and for radio and TV features
    • contributing to our Heads Up podcast
    • research
