Part-Time and Full-time Specialty Doctor positions available – recruiting for Jan 2021 and Aug 2021

Closing date: We will close once we have had sufficient applications – please contact us as soon as possible if you are interested

Rowans Hospice Charity is a welcoming and encouraging environment working in partnership with the Southern Health NHS Foundation and Solent NHS Trusts to provide multi-disciplinary specialist palliative care to adults with life limiting illnesses in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire.

We are responsive and ambitious, rising to the challenges we face to cope with increasing demand; and to help alleviate pressures on the local NHS hospital and community services. Rowans Hospice is expanding its In-Patient Unit and Hospice at Home Service to continue to provide high quality, holistic care to as many of the local population as possible. We are excited to be offering recruitment opportunities for both registered nurses and specialty doctors.

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wishes to challenge themselves and gain experience, confidence, and skills in specialist palliative medicine. This post would be ideal for someone wishing to gain more experience in palliative medicine prior to application for Specialty Training or for a GP wishing to utilise and extend their core skills and develop an interest in palliative medicine.

You will join a friendly and well supported multi-professional team, committed to high standards of care.  Your primary role will be to deliver specialist palliative care to the patients on our 19 bedded in-patient unit. This is a service post to assist the Consultants and established Specialty and Associate Specialist doctors with the management of an increasingly complex and intense caseload. Although not a training post, there will be excellent support for personal development and plenty of opportunity for personal CPD, education and quality improvement work.  CPD meetings take place within the working day.

We hope the role will be both rewarding and educational, as previous post holders have been testament to….

“As a first five GP, working at the Rowans gave me extended time with patients that I found I was missing in primary care. I enjoyed being part of a well-resourced specialist service and gained much from the consultant led approach and varied CPD opportunities. I felt supported and valued and proud to be part of such a fabulous team.”

“My experiences as a specialty doctor at Rowans Hospice has helped me develop skills and attributes I need to progress though my Palliative Medicine Specialty Training.

The role gave me the opportunity to develop my specialist knowledge; learning how to manage common palliative care symptoms, complex ethical cases and communicating in difficult circumstances.  I learnt how to work within a multidisciplinary team to coordinate holistic patient-centred care and found every member of staff friendly and approachable. I was well supported throughout the placement and enjoyed working at The Rowans immensely.

My professional development was also encouraged; I was given the opportunity to become involved in informal and formal teaching as well as leading a quality improvement project which I was able to present at national conferences. The team also offered advice and support throughout my speciality interviews for Palliative Medicine which was invaluable.”

“As a GP, I was keen to gain a more in depth understanding of palliative care.

Working at the Rowans enabled me to do this via a combination of ward work and formal and informal teaching, whilst being supported by a hugely experienced and welcoming clinical team.

I have left with increased confidence in prescribing and managing palliative care patients and their specific clinical and psychological needs. This role outside my general practice experience was invaluable and I would highly recommend this job.”
