The face of primary care has seen significant change in recent years with a falling number of GPs entering the workforce, an ageing population, the subsequent increase in workload and transitioning away from the PMS contract.

Healthcare recruitment specialist, Prospect Health, surveyed over 400 GPs, and used its extensive database, to provide an insight for surgeries into current salary levels of GPs across the UK.

The report allows surgeries to review their rates of remuneration in line with current averages or as a reference point when considering recruiting GPs in the future.

GP Salary Survey

Sessional rates

The report reveals that GP partners earn more than salaried GPs, with an average sessional rate per annum of £12,415.58 and £8,644.75 respectively. The average sessions rate per annum for GP registrars is £6,181,18.

Regional salary trends

According to the report, Scotland and the East Midlands consistently come out as the poorest paid areas for salaried GPs in the UK. However, even the best paid areas could benefit from more GPs and staff.

Time spent with patients

30% of GPs saw 10-14 patients over a typical session, which is on average 12 minutes, but alarmingly, some GPs only spent 6 minutes with their patients.

Taking breaks

30% of GPs surveyed don’t take a meal break and 36% don’t take all their breaks, preferring to work in-between sessions to make a dent in their heavy workload.

If you are struggling to find a GP for your surgery, whatever region of the UK you are in, Prospect Health offers a unique approach to recruitment for your GP vacancies.
